Message in a bottle: writing tips

I know that choosing the words for one of my messages in a bottle can be a little daunting. It can take time to find the right message, but these ideas and tips should help you along the way.

Quotes

If you’re not sure about writing your own, a quote can make the perfect message, whether it’s a reminder to yourself or a missive to a loved one.

You could select a stanza from an evocative poem, a line from a favourite song, or wise words from someone you admire. A message for a grown-up child could be a line from a book you used to read to them, or for a partner words from a song that will bring back memories of the time you met.

If nothing comes to mind, or a flick through the books on your shelves doesn’t yield any results, a trick I’ve often used for calligraphy pieces is to search online for quotes by a particular author or for a poem on a specific theme. I’ve made some inspiring discoveries that way.

Memories

A meaningful memory can be a wonderful thing to preserve in a bottle. It could be the story of how you first met a loved one, or simply a day spent with them. It could be the walks you took as a family growing up, a moment on your wedding day, or how you watched your child fall asleep when they were little.

If nothing comes to mind, think of the recipient, or the person you want to capture a memory with, and start writing ‘Remember…’ or ‘I knew you were special when…’ Keep going – and watch the stories emerge.

Personal messages

Many people give the bottles as presents and include a message of love or encouragement.

You may have the perfect quote for your recipient, or know exactly what to say. But if you don’t, pause and think of the person, and start writing, or saying out loud: ‘I want you to know that…’ or ‘The one thing I would like to pass on to you is…’

Just say or write whatever comes to mind, and keep going – the perfect message will reveal itself.

When your message is ready, you can order your bottle from my shop.
