What to do with a typewriter

I love typewriters. So much so I have two: one I’ve had since childhood, and the other a 40th birthday present. A typewriter is a lovely, characterful object to have in your home, but it’s very easy to let it gather dust and fail to actually use it and drink in the nostalgia of that clank-clank typing sound.

Ideas for using your typewriter:

  1. Add a typed note to parcels you send out, instead of a handwritten card

  2. Write a letter to a friend or relative

  3. Type the address on the envelope when sending out a birthday card

  4. Make labels: for small drawers, jars, notebooks (tip: you can type on washi tape by sticking it lightly to a sheet of paper first and then carefully peeling it off, for ready-to-stick labels)

  5. Type quotes or messages and leave them in a public place for someone to find

  6. Type out your favourite recipes onto cards so they’re easy to use when you cook

Writing on a typewriter is also a really useful way to slow down, so using it to work out ideas or to journal can also be an interesting way to explore thoughts at a different pace.

And if none of these ideas appeals, at least take your typewriter out from time to time, and just have a play!
